New Bern Computers Users Group

Located in historic New Bern, North Carolina

The New Bern Computer Users Group (NBCUG) was started in 1994 and is an informal, unstructured group of people having a common interest in personal computers.

Whatever happens at  NBCUG meetings happens because of volunteers. The group is always open to suggestions, including how to organize better. Ideas, however, always seem to require volunteers.

NBCUG meets quarterly on the third Saturday of the first month, of each quarter, unless a cancellation occurs due to bad weather or by member vote.

Social hour is from 8-9 a.m. This time is used to find which guru you want to help with your PC problems.
The program starts promptly at 9 a.m.

Meetings end at 10:30 a.m.

To help pay for the $150 rental of the meeting room, non-members are charged $3.00 admission at the door for any meeting attended, or they can elect to register and pay the requisite dues per the schedule below:

Meeting location:         The Family Life Center

3005 Country Club Rd

behind St. Paul's Catholic Church

Doors will open at 8:00am for free coffee and socializing until

the meeting begins at 9:00am.

Meetings normally finish at 10:30am.

Topic:   Drinking the Microsoft KoolAid

Speaker: Jim Cason

Presentation Summary:  When Windows 8 first came out, the most common reaction was "Oh NO, give me my menu back!!!!!"

Windows 8.1 brings back a part of the menu, and the new alphabetized start screen provides an easy way to get to all the applications.

Learn about many new advances in Windows 8.1:

  • Microsoft OneDrive (cloud based storage and automatic transfer to other computers),

  • a Microsoft account (using an email address so that all your logins are tied to the same account),

  • Touch Oriented new style applications, including a touch optimized Internet Explorer,

  • Task Manager changes,

  • File History (you can go back to that version of the document that you saved, then changed - this does require a second file storage device),

  • support of high speed USB3 devices,

  • built-in support for broadband networking,

  • Quick StartUp,

  • support for larger and new type storage devices,

  • considerably better security including prevention of pre-boot rootkits, and

  • native support for UEFI Booting (you will know why that is important),

The conclusion will discuss the new requirements for making image backups and restoration of the operating system on these new UEFI based computers.

Starting in 2006 there were 396 members with 337 on the NBCUG e-mail list. Being able to send a message to all members using the club's broadcast e-mail address is an invaluable way for members to get help with a PC problem.
